Tacurong Inugyunay Festival: Will there be an Inugyunay Festival this 2011?

There are two festivals Tacurong City is known for- Talakudong and the Inugyunay Festival. I was lucky enough to have witnessed both festivals for several years now and I’ve seen a few changes especially for Inugyunay festival. For those who don’t know what Inugyunay mean,  inugyun” is a hiligaynon/ilonggo word which mean “unite”. Thus “inugyunay” would mean “bonding” together, “to band” or “to unite”.

Tacurong’s Inugyunay Festival is a monthlong celebration which starts with spectacular, tree lighting contest, nightly cultural shows, bazaars, plaza night market  and capped by fireworks display at the climax of the celebration. Celebrated by the city of  Tacurong  from the second week of December to the first week of January the following year, many Tacurongnon and visitors gather in the city plaza to watch the colorful and lively lighted trees and the free nightly cultural shows or to just stroll around the plaza market.

Interestingly, there’s this urban legend that the Light a Tree and thus Inugyunay festival was borne out of the fascination by Tacurongnons to the spectacular christmas light display by one street in Tacurong City. I remember during my younger years, my mom and our neighborhood would decorate our house, front gates, and the road in front of our house with colorful christmas lights that lighted the subdivision road all through out the night. The lively, creative lights and decors awed passers and made them stop, reroute their vehicles and gazed for a moment at our lighted subdivision road. It’s not even unusual to see visitors posing and ask that their pictures be taken as they pass through this road.  The numbers of visitors and watchers increased as the years goes by and so as the legend was told, someone took notice and started what we have now as Inugyunay festival.

Inugyunay Festival's Light a Tree Contest in 2009

I witnessed the last Light a tree contest of the Inugyunay Festival  two years ago. Last year was different, because the Inugyunay festival featured a “Belen” Decoration contest instead of the usual Light A tree contest. The fireworks display was shortened too. This year, I still don’t have any idea what would come out  during the Inugyunay Festival. The City’s website mention nothing about the celebration.  It hasn’t started yet, so definitely it will be shorter compared to previous years celebration.

Lets just cross our fingers and wait in excitement for the festival to come! Na miss mo na ba ang Inugyunay Festival????Comment here and subscribe to this site for updates!
